Thesis Title

Detection of Cyanobacterial Ecotypes in a Hot Spring Microbial Mat Using Multi-Locus Sequence Typing (MLST)

Abstract:

There has been an ongoing debate about what constitutes the fundamental unit or a species in microbiology. Past research by Dave Ward and Fred Cohan has suggested that known bacterial species can be further broken down and classified into ecotypes; populations defined by a particular ecology. Work has been done on the 16S rRNA and ITS regions of the genomes of A-type and B-type cyanobacteria from Yellowstone National Park, however this has not led to a definitive definition of what constitutes an ecotype on the genomic level. The current studying uses a molecular technique, MLST to achieve higher resolution in determining what the fundamental ecological units/clusters are in the hot spring mat.
