LRES Scholarship Information

The many friends of the College of Agriculture provide more scholarship funds in support of our undergraduate and graduate students than for any other college at MSU.  Students in the Department of Land Resources and Environmental Sciences are encouraged to compete for many of these awards.  In addition, the department is pleased to offer several scholarships, presented below, that are geared more specifically to students in our curricula.  Student achievement, extracurricular activities, leadership, and career goals are considered in scholarship applications.  The financial support provided through such gifts frequently assists students in completing their degree programs, and serves as strong impetus to seek excellence during their academic and professional careers.

Land Resources Stewardship Scholarship

To recognize student excellence and achievement in pursuing the study of land resources use and management.  Criteria include: Recipients must be pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in a Land resources and Environmental Sciences curricula; must be of at least Sophomore standing; must maintain at least a 2.75 GPA.

Marion T. Hedegaard Scholarship

Awarded to worthy students enrolled in Land Resources and Environmental Sciences, with preference given to those students from rural areas in Eastern Montana.

Frank F. Munshower Scholarship in Land Rehabilitation

Dr. Munshower initiated the Master of Science degree program in Land Rehabilitation and completed a 25 year career in research, teaching and service at Montana State University.  This scholarship is testimony to Dr. Munshower’s commitment to the field of land reclamation science, his graduate students and peers within the scientific, environmental and industrial communities.  Criteria include: applicants must be a new or continuing student pursuing a Master of Science degree in Land Rehabilitation from the Department of Land Resources and Environmental Sciences at Montana State University; preference will be given to a student interested in or actively pursuing a thesis topic involving the use of plants to remediate drastically disturbed lands.  The application package must include a letter from the student that outlines research interests and career goals, vita and a recommendation letter from the student’s major professor.

Dr. Arthur H. Post Memorial Scholarship

In recognition of Dr. Arthur H. Post, former Department Head of Plant and Soil Science (former department name).  Criteria include: graduate of a Montana High School, undergraduate or graduate enrolled in the Department of Land Resources and Environmental Sciences or the Department of Plant Science and Plant Pathology, enrolled (at least) half-time, good standing and satisfactory progress, and must be of good citizenship and character.

Clyde and Helen Erskine Fund for Excellence in Agriculture

The Helen E. and Clyde S. Erskine Early Day Montana Dude Ranch Scholarship was established by Helen E. “Bess” Erskine with gifts she made during her lifetime and through her estate in recognition of her parents, Dick and Nora Randall, who developed the first active Dude Ranch in the United States in 1898, which was known as the OTO, being the cattle brand used by the Randalls.  The scholarship recognizes excellence in students pursuing a B.S. degree in the Department of Land Resources and Environmental Sciences or the Department of Plant Sciences and Plant pathology.  Criteria include: junior standing or above and student achievement.
